All About New World Wine

What are the naming conventions used for new world wine? How does it differ in taste from old world wine? Keep reading to find out the answers to these questions as well as about the delicious new world wine varieties we produce at Land O Lakes Winery.

What Is New World Wine?

The wine experts over at Wine Folly define new world wine as wines that come from any country where Vitis vinifera grapes had to be imported.

New World Wine Countries

New world wine is produced in many different countries, including:

  • The U.S.
  • Chile
  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • Canada
  • China
  • India
  • Japan

Now, while wine can be found in any of the above countries, these are the main six new world wine countries:

  • The U.S
  • Chile
  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa

New World Wine Naming Conventions

New world wine names are pretty straight forward as they are named for the principal grape varietal, if that principal grape makes up most of the wine. So, if a wine is made of all or even mostly Pinot Noir grapes, it will be labeled a Pinot Noir.

Blends Vs. Varietals

In order for a wine to be labeled for a specific grape varietal, it has to be made of a certain percentage of that grape, otherwise it will have to be labeled a blend. That percentage varies by country. For example, in the U.S., in order for a wine to be labeled for a certain grape varietal, it has to be comprised of at least 75% of that grape varietal. So, in order for a California Cabernet Savuignon to be labeled as such, the wine has to be made of at least 75% of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

New World Wine Characteristics

Due to climate differences, wines from the new world tend to taste different than old world wines. New world wines are typically riper, less acidic, and more fruit forward.
