The keto diet is certainly taking the dieting world by storm. But, just because you’re following the keto diet, that doesn’t mean you have to give up your nightly glass of vino. In fact, there are many low carb wines out there that are very keto friendly. What Is The Keto Diet?

For those of you that are still unfamiliar with this new dieting fad, the keto diet, otherwise known as the ketogenic diet, is a very low carb, high fat diet. It is actually similar to the Atkins diet and has a long list of foods and beverages that people following need to avoid, including alcohol due to its often high carb content and sugar levels.

Keto-Friendly Wines

While not all wines are good for those following the keto diet, there are many that are keto-friendly. Here are some rules to follow when trying to find a keto-friendly wine:

  • Look for a wine that is low in alcohol. Stick to 13.5% ABV (alcohol by volume) or less.
  • Stick to wines that are dry and have very little residual sugar. No residual sugar is ideal, but the majority of wines have at least a little residual sugar in them due to the winemaking process.
  • Look for a wine that contains very little or no carbs. Something that has less than 5 grams of carbs per 5 oz serving is your best bet.

While all of these rules sound easy enough to follow, most wine labels don’t typically list their carb counts, alcohol percentage, or residual sugar levels, so it can be hard to determine those numbers. But, don’t worry, we have your back!

Wines To Avoid If You Are On Keto

While the wines on the list above are known for their lower sugar contents, this list isn’t. The following wines have way too much sugar in them to be okay for your keto diet, so make sure to avoid them:

  • Moscato
  • Sweet Riesling
  • White Zinfandel
  • Zinfandel
  • Sauternes
  • Shiraz
  • Pinotage
  • Grenache
  • Sangiovese
