It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and that means it’s the perfect time to gather together friends and family to celebrate. Whether you’re hosting a laid-back meal, a fancy wine tasting soiree, a cookie exchange, or anything in between, these simple and creative ideas will help set your holiday party apart this year and make entertaining easier!
1. Don’t Forget The Music!
There are plenty of holiday playlists available on any number of free music streaming sites; from Spotify to Pandora, you’re sure to find one with the perfect holiday music to fit the mood you’re going for.
Finding the right music may be simple, but what about playing the music during the party? While the speakers on your phone may work fine for your personal use, you will probably want to consider a way to amplify the sound so your guests can hear, too! There’s no need to purchase a fancy sound system or blue tooth speaker, though. A simple Google search returns a number of suggestions for how to make a speaker by setting your phone inside a cup. For extra appeal, use a holiday-themed cup as your speaker amplifier!
2. Set Mood Lighting
This simple task makes a significant difference when it comes to setting the right atmosphere at your holiday party. Turn off the harsh overhead lights and opt for lights on a dimmer or strategically placed lamps to do the trick. Then, add to the ambience by placing strings of LED twinkle lights in empty wine bottles. This simple change will completely transform your space and your wine-bottle lights will definitely be a feature everyone will remember! Empty wine bottles can also be filled with sprigs of greenery or berries for a seasonal bouquet that makes a beautiful table setting.
3. Mismatched Drinking Glasses
While perfectionist hosts may shudder at this suggestion, using mismatched drinking glasses not only creates a cool eclectic vibe, but makes it easier for everyone to keep track of their drinks! Visit your local thrift store to stock up on a variety rather than splurging on a brand-new, matching sets of glasses. Not only will you avoid using paper products – an environmental plus! – but no one will be too devastated if any glasses are broken. Already have plenty of wine glasses? Purchase holiday themed wine glass charms like these on Amazon to keep drink mix-ups to a minimum.
4. Set A Scented Simmer
You’ve already set the mood lighting, but to create the perfect holiday ambience for your gathering, try setting a stove top simmer. The sense most strongly tied to memory is scent, so this task will make your holiday party extra memorable!
My favorite stovetop simmer recipe is from Halfbaked Harvest and uses:
- Fresh cranberries
- Whole cinnamon sticks
- Star anise
- Whole cloves
- Fresh ginger
- Fresh pine
- Apple cider, pomegranate, or cranberry juice
Simply combine these ingredients (or whatever ingredients you’re using) in a pot with water and set uncovered on the stove at a low simmer for 4-6 hours. Your entire home will smell deliciously like the holidays without the use of any chemicals.
5. Use Your Washing Machine as a Drink Cooler
A regular conundrum when hosting a party at any time of the year is where to put all the extra food and drinks. You certainly don’t want to run out of room in your fridge for the food, make guests go into the cold garage to grab a beverage, or risk having a cooler leak in your house. While the sink makes for a good option for very small gatherings, if you’re hosting more than a few guests, consider filling your washing machine with ice and drinks to use as a cooler! As the ice melts, the water will simply drain out, making cleanup minimal.
